The Texas Longhorns recently promoted Terry Joseph to be the team's safeties coach, but the New Orleans Saints have poached him away before he could even start doing much in his new role. Joseph, who was instrumental in the recruitment of star defensive backs Jahdae Barron and Kyle Hamilton (Notre Dame), was also named the team's new defensive passing game and secondary coordinator.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has watch three assistants now bolt after Blake Gideon joined Georgia Tech and Tashard Choice went to the Detroit Lions. Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods first reported the move.

Joseph, 51, is the cousin of Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph. He had been with Texas since January 2021 and commanded a salary in the $800,000 range. Sarkisian had been lauded as one of the best in the industry at retaining his staff, but this offseason has proved its not just about Sarkisian's presence.

The reality is that other programs and NFL teams see top collegiate staffs as a breeding ground for the best coaches. It was always just a matter of time for this to happen. Eventually, there will be bigger titles and more money for assistants to bolt.

But this could have a major impact on Texas' recruiting efforts.

Joseph was a key recruiter for the Texas staff, particularly in his home state of Louisiana. He significantly secured commitments from players like Wardell Mack, Derek Williams Jr., and even Arch Manning. His recruiting success extended beyond Louisiana, as he also helped land talents such as Kobe Black and Malik Muhammad.

This offseason, the Longhorns brought in another skilled recruiter from Louisiana, defensive ends coach LaAllan Clark, who joined from Ohio State.

It's uncertain what direction Texas will take in finding a replacement for Joseph on the back end of the defense. The team has just hired a new defensive backs coach, Orphey, so there is a possibility that they already have a candidate in mind or have conducted interviews.
