NFL fans of the late 2000s and 2010s should remember Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Lawrence Timmons. Making Second-Team All-Pro and the Pro Bowl once, the Super Bowl champion was a mainstay for the franchise for a decade before finishing his career in Miami. Now, his son is looking to make his own path in football.
Lawrence "Jay" Timmons is an emerging 2026 recruiting prospect racking up scholarship offers. The Pennsylvania native is a 3-star talent turning heads as teams prepare to go all-in on next year's class. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound cornerback received his ninth Power 4 scholarship offer this week.
Currently, there are no clear frontrunners, but three schools worth monitoring are West Virginia, Pittsburgh, and Wisconsin. The Mountaineers were the first to offer Timmons, and he has built a strong rapport with them.
He had nothing but positive things to say about the Mountaineers at camp last year when he ran a 4.4 40-yard dash for coaches.
“I mean, coach (Cory) Sanders is staying in touch,” Timmons said. “And there’s a dude named Kline, Alex Kline, I’m pretty sure his name is. He’s staying in touch. But I feel like WVU is staying more in touch than Pitt.
“Like, Blaine Stewart. He’s staying real in touch with me and I’m supposed to — I talked to the head coach, and I think I’m supposed to go back down there in July. I got a tour after the WVU camp, and I got to talk to the head coach in his office and he told me he’s gonna get me down in July with my family. So that would be super fun. I really like the coaching staff at WVU.
Pittsburgh benefits from familiarity since Timmons plays for Pine-Richland High School in the northern suburbs of the city. He has visited their campus several times, and his father spent much of his NFL career with the Steelers. However, Wisconsin will host Timmons for his next visit, as the family is scheduled to travel to Madison in March for a junior day event.
Timmons' time with the Steelers left a lasting impression. A fan favorite, he wrapped up his NFL career with impressive stats, including 1,067 tackles, 35.5 sacks, 13 forced fumbles, and 12 interceptions. He was named an All-Pro in 2014, the same year the Steelers captured the Super Bowl title.
Additionally, Timmons excelled during his college years at Florida State, earning All-American honors in 2006. While the Seminoles have not yet made a serious push for Timmons' son, they should be considered if they decide to pursue him.
