The Kansas City Chiefs finished the 2024 NFL season with a reputation for always finding a way to win, even in the closest of games. At one point this year, they had the smallest margin of victory in any 9-0 stretch in NFL history. By the end of the year, they were 12-0 in one-score games, recording an NFL record of 17 consecutive wins in one-score games dating back to Week 17 of the 2023 NFL season.

The people seeking to discredit this team's greatness attribute its success in one-score situations to several different factors. Recently, there has been nonsense about officiating bias. But before that became the month's flavor, people discredited the Chiefs' success by calling the team lucky.

Speaking to media members on Wednesday ahead of Super Bowl LIX, Chiefs rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy pinpointed the reason behind the team's perceived luck.

"Lots of people say like, 'Oh yeah. it's luck' and stuff like that," Worthy explained. "So, I feel like it's not luck because we practice it. It's stuff that we go through throughout the week and stuff that we went through throughout OTAs and training camp. We had practices and training camp where we had the long-drive drill, we had the two-minute drill, we had the four-minute drill, we worked on third downs while we were tired at the end of practice. So it's stuff that we worked on. That's just a tribute to what we worked on throughout the off-season."

The rookie knows the Chiefs' secret to success: They create their own luck through rigorous preparation.

It starts during OTAs and training camps and carries throughout the NFL season. They always seem to rise to the occasion in the most challenging moments because they practice meticulously. And it's not just about the game situation, but also the rigorous conditions of gridiron football. They practice it while they're mentally tired and physically exhausted, so that recalling and relying on it is just a little bit easier.

To call the Chiefs "lucky" is to discredit all the work that goes into their success. Sure, some elements always have to go your way in the NFL. However, the practices that are tough enough to make you throw up, the countless hours of meetings, and the detail-oriented film study are the things that Kansas City has mastered in a way that no other team has.
