The Ohio State Buckeyes were raided for coaching talent following their National Championship win like good teams often are.
Ohio State watched defensive coordinator Jim Knowles take a big pay raise and the same position at Penn State. Offensive coordinator Chip Kelly made a leap to the NFL to be the offensive play caller for the Las Vegas Raiders.
The Buckeyes have addressed each departure and have their coaching staff in place for the most part. If there is one thing that Ryan Day is high on, it is making sure the right coaches are where they need to be.
“You want to get it right. You got to get the right people in the right seats. Like I’ve learned that, if you said give me the number one thing you’ve learned being the head coach, that’s the thing you have to get right,” Day explained recently in an interview with The Podcast. “A week or two may seem like a big deal, but it’s a lot different when you have somebody and it’s not the right person in that spot.”
Day went with Brian Hartline to call the plays for the offense and it was a due opportunity for the former Buckeye. Hartline was the OC in 2023 but Day called the plays. Now, Hartline gets his first chance to be the playcaller.
Ohio State brought in NFL veteran assistant Matt Patricia to be the defensive coordinator for the Buckeyes. It is a bit of a risk with Patricia, who has had some rough Patrice’s in his career despite multiple Super Bowl wins.
Following the National Championship, Day has the ability to take small risks with his coaching staff like Hartline being the play caller. However, Day feels confident in Hartline, someone who has been on his staff since he was named the head coach in Columbus.
There have been times when assistant coaches haven’t worked out for the Buckeyes and Day seems to have learned from that earlier in his career. Now, the head coach is comfortable with taking any amount of time needed to make the right hire. Ohio State waited a couple of weeks to replace Knowles, which is an example of just that.
