It was a sold-out arena in Columbus for the Ohio State Buckeyes over the weekend when they hosted No. 20 Michigan and eventually fell by a score of 86-83.
Ohio State was within reach of winning but was unable to take control of the game late. Michigan held a five-point lead at halftime and they survived a second-half push from the Buckeyes. Forward Devin Royal led the way with 26 points, while Bruce Thornin (17) and John Mobley Jr. (16) rounded out the top scorers.
How the game went made one former OSU hoops standout make a statement about the current team that sits at 15-11. LaQuinton Ross had this to say about the Buckeyes on X:
“This Ohio State team doesn’t have a dawg! Not 1….they all good players but no dawg!!”
Ross averaged 15.2 points and 5.9 rebounds per game during the 2013-14 season for Ohio State as a junior. The Mississippi native went on to play an international career after three seasons with Ohio State.
Ohio State is currently fighting for a spot in the postseason and will likely need at least 18 wins to get there. Left in the regular season for Ohio State are Northwestern, UCLA, USC, Nebraska, and Indiana. Four wins would all but certify that Ohio State makes it into March Madness.
As far as Ross’ comment goes, Ohio State is going to need a ‘dawg’ to step up if they hope to have any success in March. Thornton is the leader of the team averaging 17.3 points and 4.4 assists per game, but even he was unable to step up in the final moments against Michigan. Thornton had an open look at the rim to tie the game for the Buckeyes in the final seconds but airballed the look.
Jake Diebler has OSU in contention to make the NCAA Tournament in his first season as the official head coach, which is a good spot to be in. Now, the Buckeyes just have to finish the job and get there.
