The New York Jets and quarterback Aaron Rodgers will move on in different directions next season. It's not a surprising development, because their timelines don't match anymore. Under general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Gleen, the Jets will start a rebuild.
Meanwhile, Rodgers has to make a decision about his career first. If he decides to keep playing at 41, the urgency to win his second Super Bowl will be obvious. And, according to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, the veteran quarterback gave indications to the Jets that his plan is to keep playing football in 2025.
"Rodgers did tell Mougey and Glenn that it was his tentative intention to play in 2025. These things can change, of course, but Rodgers gave the Jets the impression that he had unfinished business to take care of."
Even though Rodgers' tenure with the Jets wasn't successful with a serious Achilles injury in 2023 and rough results in 2024, Breer mentioned that the new team management believes Rodgers can still play at a good level. "The Jets do believe Rodgers still has bullets left in the gun," Breer wrote.
This past season, Aaron Rodgers was 19th in EPA/play and 24th in success rate. While those aren't great numbers compared to what Rodgers has done throughout his entire career, they are still much better than several starters.
In EPA/play, for example, Rodgers was better than Trevor Lawrence, Russell Wilson, Dak Prescott, Bryce Young, Drake Maye, CJ Stroud, Caleb Williams, Anthony Richardson, and Will Levis.
Some of the teams with those quarterbacks could be willing to go in a different direction at quarterback—Pittsburgh Steelers, Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans. And if that's ultimately the case, Aaron Rodgers can have a new opportunity to finish up his career on a higher note.
