Super Bowl LIX didn't go as expected. With a pre-game betting spread of one point, the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles were expected to intensely battle it out for 60 minutes.
Instead, what took place was an absolute blowout. Even the final 40-22 score doesn't make the Eagles justice for their performance on the field, specially on defense.
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has been praised for his ability to pressure Patrick Mahomes consistently despite not blitzing at all on Sunday. The Eagles were elite in coverage, forcing Mahomes to keep the ball longer and the defensive line went to town versus the Chiefs.
Fangio's work on defense translated to Patrick Mahomes joining Dallas Cowboys legendary quarterback Roger Staubach on a two-man club neither wants to be a part of.
According to ESPN: "Mahomes is the second QB in Super Bowl history to take six sacks against four or fewer pass rushers. The Cowboys' Roger Staubach took six in Super Bowl X against the Steelers."
What makes the above stat even crazier is the fact that teams blitz more nowadays compared to 1976, when sacks weren't even an official stat. Fangio not needing to blitz in 2025 to get that level of success rushing the passer is much more impressive.
The feat also speaks volumes about the performance Philly put together, as their Super Bowl performance is up there with the iconic Steel Curtain.
In Staubach's defense, the Cowboys lost Super Bowl X in a very different way, falling to the Steelers 21-17 after Pittsburgh mounted a 14-point fourth quarter. The Chiefs were ran out of the Superdome. Staubach did throw three interceptions that day.
Beyond just being a fun fact though, it's a reminder that even all-time greats can have a bad day when they're playing for all the marbles.
Defense wins championships they say, and it might be a cliché. But after Sunday, it certainly feels like a truthful one.
