Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter was fantastic this past season. To reward him, he was voted the winner of the prestigious Heisman trophy.
The big question surrounding him now has been, will an NFL team let him play both sides of the ball, and if they don't, which position would he play? He might have finally answered that question with his position assignment for the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine being released.
Travis Hunter set to attend the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine as a cornerback
Hunter was the number one recruit in his high school class listed as a corner, though he played both sides of the ball in high school. After committing to Jackson State to play for Deion Sanders, he continued to play on both sides of the ball. But it is often debated which position he is actually the best at.
Personally, I think his best path to success at the pro level is at WR. The market at that position has exploded in recent years. And even players who are great but not quite elite at the position have cashed in for major contracts. Hunter has shown the ability to play both positions at a high level. But corner is one of the most challenging positions to play, especially in today's NFL with so much talent at wide receiver. I think his best bet would be to play WR and allow teams to use him as a corner in select formations.
He has now been listed as a defensive back ahead of the Scouting Combine. Which means he will participate in on-field drills and media interviews with this group. We will have to wait to see if he reveals in those interviews if NFL teams asked for him to work out as a corner or if this was a decision he and his team made. My guess is when his pro day comes around, we will see him working at both positions still, but this seems like the first telling sign that corner might be his preference of the two positions.
