Ohio State will have a new starting quarterback in 2025 for the third straight season with Will Howard off to the NFL following the National Championship.
Howard was the exact QB that the Buckeyes needed for their College Football Playoff run that is going to be remembered forever. The former Kansas State transfer led Ohio State to wins over Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and Notre Dame.
The Buckeyes now hand the keys to the offense over to a new quarterback from a room that consists of Julian Sayin, Lincoln Kienholz, and freshman Tavien St. Clair.
“It’ll be a very fierce competition,” Day said in a recent interview with WBNS 10TV’s Dom Tiberi. “Lincoln, Julian, and then Tavien — we’re excited to see those guys compete. We’ll chart everything and everything will be a competition.
“I feel like we’re going to need everybody. I feel like there will be a lot of growth coming out of this spring and an opportunity for these guys to take it and run.”
Sayin is the front-runner in the room in his second season with the Buckeyes. The 6-foot-1 Alabama transfer decided to transfer when Nick Saban retired and he was one of three members of the Crimson Tide to lane in Columbus last year. Sayin is a former five-star recruit and No. 1 quarterback in the class of 2021.
The talented quarterback out of California was an Elite 11 winner in high school and was QB No. 3 for Ohio State as a freshman. Sayin played in four games as a freshman and completed 5-of-12 passes for 84 yards and a touchdown.
Kienholz is seen as the veteran in the room and is entering his third season with the Buckeyes. The former four-star recruit is a prime candidate to be the backup for Ohio State if he does not transfer after spring football.
The freshman St. Clair was perhaps the best quarterback in the class of 2025 and likely for Ohio State it was an easy recruitment in nearby Bellefontaine, Ohio. St. Clair is very talented and has the physical tools already to be on the field. Barring anything unforeseen, he will sit a year or two.
Quarterback competitions are nothing new in Columbus and they have been known to run up until days before the season opener. Day and the staff won’t be in any rush to name a starter in 2025 either.
