Former NFL Pro Bowler turned Fox Sports analyst Mark Schlereth made some comments about San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings on Thursday that might not sit well with fellow 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel.
Earlier this month, Samuel requested a trade from the 49ers.
Schlereth suggested that Jennings, who would be in line for a more significant role in San Francisco's offense in the event of a trade, could be an upgrade (from a route-running standpoint) over Samuel.
"I think one of the keys to this season has been Jauan Jennings for the San Francisco 49ers," said Schlereth. "And I think one of the things they figured out is, 'Hey, Jauan is a dog, Jauan is great at blocking. We think Jauan can do a lot of the things that Deebo Samuel does for us'. As far as, you know, the jet sweeps, lining up in the backfield, all of those things. But he's actually a better wide receiver. And I think from just a pure route-running standpoint, I think they found out that Jauan Jennings, they feel like, is a little bit better upgrade at the wide receiver position — strictly because he played a lot of X receiver because they had so many injuries. So he developed in that role."
Schlereth made sure to point that he thinks Samuel is a unique talent who is a freak athlete. He simply thinks that Jennings is an "absolute dog" that's a better pure route runner than Samuel.
What Schlereth is saying makes sense, and it's not a shot at Samuel. But I think we all know that wide receiver is the most ego-driven position in the NFL. And I'm sure that Samuel won't love the fact that a former NFL player is suggesting that the 49ers will be just fine without him on the roster.
On the other hand, Schlereth is spot-on when it comes to his take on Jennings. The former Tennessee Vols standout absolutely is a dog. And his willingness to play with 100 percent effort on every single rep is why he's gone from a seventh round selection without a promised spot on the 53-man roster to a key part of the 49ers' offense over the last several years.
