The Los Angeles Rams are headed for a tumultuous offseason. The rumors around quarterback Matthew Stafford are still circling as loud as ever, star wide receiver Cooper Kupp seems at the end of his career in Los Angeles, and the team has plenty of pending free agents to retain.

What is the team's active salary cap situation? How much cap room do they have this offseason? Who are the team's biggest impending free agents this offseason?

Los Angeles Rams 2025 salary cap tracker

While I won't get into the specifics of breaking down the minutiae of what the salary cap is and other assorted numbers, it's important to note how each team's cap space is calculated.

A team's cap space simply equals the team's salary cap minus the active cap spending and the dead money on the team. A team's salary cap is

For the Los Angeles Rams, here is where their numbers stand (as of right now):

Cap Space: $44,371,906
Effective Cap Space: $41,743,695
Active Cap Spending: $217,920,291
Dead Money: $19,975,506

This puts the Rams with the 15th-most cap space and 14th-most effective cap space in the league this offseason, a relatively healthy cap space situation to be in.

How can the Rams generate more cap space?

There are a few ways that teams can open up cap space. Most often, these are handled with cuts, trades, extensions, and restructures. The Rams have a few avenues they can do to open up their cap space this offseason.

The Rams could rework Matthew Stafford's deal on a new extension that would drop his cap hit from $46M to a more manageable number. His contract is the biggest tool in their arsenal for cap maneuverability.

If they bring Stafford back on his current contract but offer him a full restructure, the Rams could open up nearly $13M more in cap space, moving them up to $57M in cap space.

If I'm Los Angeles, I would also approach guard Kevin Dotson for a restructure. He has the third-highest cap hit on the team, but his roster spot is safe for next season. A full restructure for him could open up close to $8M as well. If combined with the Stafford deal, that would put them at roughly $65M in space, putting them seventh in the league.

Cutting wide receiver Cooper Kupp pre-June 1st would save an additional $7.5M, but it seems like the team will want to trade him or designate him as a Post-June 1st trade to split his dead money.

A move I would like to see the Rams do would be to trade Jonah Jackson. He has the fourth-highest cap hit on the team but sat on the bench all season. Trading him would open up another $3M in cap space, inching the Rams closer to the top five. They could also open up $3M more by releasing cornerback Derion Kendrick.

Theoretically, if the Rams pulled off all of these moves, they could have $78.5M in cap space, beating out Arizona for the fifth-most. If they want to be aggressive in the offseason, they have some flexibility to do just that.
