When the news broke that the Houston Texans had fired offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, the reactions were mixed. You had the Texans fan base knowing it would happen and excited, and then others who don't pay attention to the team confused, and asking why, saying it didn't make any sense and that he was not the reason for their struggles. Well, he was a reason, but he was not the only reason.
So, the Texans went and got a brilliant young offensive mind from the Sean McVay tree, which seems to work out a ton now these days. Head coach DeMeco Ryans hired the former Los Angeles Rams pass game coordinator and tight ends coach Nick Caley, a guy who was either going to be an offensive coordinator this year or next year, for sure.
But, the casual fan may not know who he is, really. Just leave it to one of the greatest Texans players of all time to tell you if it was a great hire or not.
“I think it was a great hire,” Hall of Fame receiver Andre Johnson told KPRC 2. “Very creative mind, just very excited. To see what we have right now for the organization, things have been trending in the right direction. At the end of the day, I thought Bobby was a great guy and a great coach. You hate to see anyone get fired. I’m sure he’ll get another job somewhere else. I’m just excited about the season.”
And more importantly, this hire seems to fit one of the biggest things you have to factor in when making a hire, being in the position the Texans are in — does he fit your franchise quarterback?
“I think it’s a great thing,” Johnson added. “(Caley) has worked with some great players and C.J. (Stroud) is a great player. I’m sure they’ll be picking each others’ brains. C.J. is a kid who really wants to learn. He’s always trying to do something to better himself. The future is bright for the organization. I can’t wait for next season.”
The duo seems like it's going to work out. And, to be honest, it kind of has to. The Texans' window and chance at a Super Bowl is not closing, per se, but it's going to get tighter over the next few years. C.J. Stroud can't stay on that rookie contract for too long. In fact, after this 2025 season, we can really start having conversations about him being the highest-paid player in the NFL, because that is very likely to happen.
For now, he and Caley will be getting to work, and Johnson seems to think it's a great hire and even laid down the hammer on the reality of Slowik being let go.
For now, the Texans have to worry about keeping ahead of the Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans, and Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC South, as all of those teams are trying to bring down the Texans.
