The Miami Dolphins held their rookie minicamp over the weekend, and it was an opportunity for the team to get their first look at their rookie class on the field at their facilities.
While the focus might have been on first-round pick Kenneth Grant and the rest of the rookie class, there was another battle going on behind the scenes among hopefuls seeking to catch on as tryout players. That included both rookie undrafted free agents and veterans.
Well, veteran, as it turns out, as Miami had just one veteran tryout player in attendance, according to the team's official minicamp roster. And on Monday, they decided they liked what they saw from him enough to keep him in town longer, as the Dolphins announced they signed CB Kendall Sheffield to the 90-man roster.
Sheffield is someone with a decent bit of experience, but he's yet to have made an impact anywhere he's gone. He was selected in the fourth round by Atlanta in the 2019 NFL Draft and went on to start 20 games from 2019-2020 for the Falcons. Most recently he split 2023 between San Francisco and Tennessee before catching on with the Jets in 2024, with whom he appeared in 6 games. Over his career, he's appeared in 49 games with 20 starts, totaling 114 combined tackles with no interceptions.
Sheffield isn't someone who's realistically going to push for an impactful role with the team. At this point, he appears to be another veteran option as the team continues to look to improve overall depth to the CB and add some experience, which is lacking with Jalen Ramsey supposedly set to be traded. The Dolphins signed Artie Burns earlier this offseason but Burns and Sheffield are likely fighting for a back end 53-man roster spot/special teams role at this point.
The Dolphins are surely looking at better options, but for now, they're adding one more name to a room that needs an overhaul. That certainly can't hurt at this point.
