When the 2025 NFL Draft started, it was thought that the Cleveland Browns could be interested in taking former Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders. If they were going to take him, it figured to be a trade-up into the first or with their pick at No. 33 overall.
That didn’t happen and Sanders had quite the unprecedented fall all the way to Day 3 of the draft. Cleveland took Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel in the third round and it seemed like that would take the Browns out of the running for Sanders.
Cleveland ended Sanders’ fall and surprised everyone by trading up into the fifth round to take the son of Deion Sanders. The immediate thought was that the Browns couldn’t pass up the value there with the QB purgatory they have been in. That was exactly the case for Cleveland.
“We felt like he was a good, solid prospect at the most important position. We felt like it got to a point where he was probably mispriced relative to the draft,” Browns GM Andrew Berry said. “Really, the acquisition cost was pretty light, and it’s a guy that we think can outproduce his draft slot. So, I wouldn’t say it’s any more than that.”
Sanders enters a crowded quarterback room with another rookie, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Deshaun Watson. There is a good chance that Watson won’t suit up in 2025 after reinjuring his Achilles.
“We felt like it wasn’t necessarily the plan going into the weekend to select two quarterbacks, but as we talk about, we do believe in best player available, we do believe in positional value, and we didn’t necessarily expect him to be available in the fifth round.”
Cleveland now has a new player who is going to bring a ton of attention. Whether that will end up a good or bad thing is yet to be seen. It isn’t much of a risk for the Browns with how late they got him in the draft, but it sure could end up being quite the steal.
Cleveland Browns have signed a Pro Bowl free agent following the NFL draft and the juice may not be worth the squeeze
The Browns are at least interested.
