The Dallas Cowboys are currently finalizing a deal for Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens, making the Washington Commanders' lives much harder when it comes to stopping intra-divisional passing attacks.
The Commanders secondary was a weak point in 2024 and it prompted the team to trade for Marshon Lattimore right before the regular season deadline. That didn't pan out, however, as injuries and poor play left much to be desired. Those factors also left the Commanders' cornerback room with some big questions heading into the offseason.
Adam Peters and Co. did address the position by bringing in Jonathan Jones and drafting Trey Amos in the second round of the most recent NFL Draft. At the same time though, both guys come with their own set of questions that could easily lead to some more inconsistencies in the cornerback room.
Things are going to have to get figured out quickly, whether for good or bad. The NFC East passing attacks are loaded at this point and it's obvious stopping them will be crucial when it comes to Washington's desire to take a step forward in 2025.
Just look at the receiver combos for each opposing NFCE team: The Cowboys have CeeDee Lamb and now Pickens. The Eagles have AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith and the Giants have Malik Nabers, who has the potential to be a top-5 receiver in his own right.
The Commanders have to get the secondary issues solved in 2025, or if not that far, at least take massive strides toward figuring out the right solution. It all hinges on Lattimore, to be honest. Not only does he have to stay healthy, but he has to show he can still play at the Pro Bowl level the Commanders envisioned when they traded for him. Hell, he needs to show he can even play at a competent level, because that wasn't close to the case when he was actually on the field. Regardless of his health situation – he was simply not good.
If Lattimore can't rise to the occasion it could lead to the group disappointing as a whole and if that happens, well, we will see a lot of the same issues that held Washington back from completely shocking the world in 2024.
