Jaguars' Liam Coen reveals exactly what the plan will be to get Travis Hunter to eventually play both sides of the ball

The NFL really hasn't seen very many players like Travis Hunter, and somehow, out of every team, the Jacksonville Jaguars are the team that gets him. Sure, there was Deion Sanders, Hunter's former coach, but Hunter wants to be full-time on both sides of the ball, all game, every game.
Now, whether that happens right away, or at all, really, is a different story. But it's certainly what he wants to do in the NFL, and being the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, you kind of get to express what you would like to do. When Hunter answered that initial phone call during the draft, he spoke to both coordinators. That alone is a sign that they are going to attempt to let him do what he wants most.
But, as a rookie, it can be hard enough to learn the playbook, system, and verbiage on one side of the ball. Imagine trying to learn both sides in one offseason, as a rookie, when you have all of the other rookie stuff going on.
The Jaguars already have somewhat of a plan in place to ease Hunter into both roles.
“It's a little bit more than a ‘we’ll see,’ but we do have to be fluid throughout, right? We’ll have a plan right now of primarily on offense with learning the defensive system and practicing on the defensive side of the ball as well throughout this offseason program," Coen said during the initial Day 1 press conference.
"As we continue to grow, we have to be fluid throughout this whole process. We’ve had multiple conversations at length with athletic training, equipment, sports science, coaching, and everybody involved about this process and what it’s going to look like moving forward. We have a plan in place, and that’s really where we’ll start.”
Hunter is an extremely smart player, maybe one of the smartest we have seen in some time, which is a huge reason he is able to play both sides of the ball, outside of his athletic ability, of course. Now, don't get it twisted, he has the tools and technique to play both sides in the NFL, but his brains are going to be his biggest money maker.
But, he can't be in two places at the same time. The next question that pops up is how will he go about working with both groups in practice when they practice at the same time.
"We've had those conversations," Coen said during Hunter's introductory press conference. "We have to be fluid. We kind of mentioned this last night in terms of from a scheduling standpoint, all those things, we have laid out. But we also have to have the ability to be agile and be fluid on specific days.
"If we don't feel like he got enough work on one side of the ball the previous day, then we need to be able to move forward and get him those reps the next day. Both Camp [Defensive Coordinator Anthony Campanile] and I and Grant [Offensive Coordinator Grant Udinski] are all on the same page about, hey, how is this thing going to work? What do we want this to look like? We want it to look like what it looked like in Colorado, and that would be pretty good for us.”
If there is any player who can do it, it's the guy who just did it for three years in college, every single snap, every single game. The guy is relentless, and he wants to be the best. You don't win the Heisman just because you play a lot either. When you watch the tape and the film, he is doing some very impressive things on both sides of the ball, in the same game.
Hunter has a chance to be a transcendent player. The Jaguars are going to help him get to that. And in return, he's going to help them win football games. And, they will need him on both sides of the ball, because teams like the Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans, and Indianapolis Colts have great players on both sides of the ball.
The Jaguars have a guy who plays both sides of the ball, though. Checkmate.
