Go back four, five years, and you could easily see Russell Wilson as one of the most important players in Seattle Seahawks' history. The quarterback in the amazing 2013/2014 era, Wilson was an instrumental part of the franchises' winningest era. After all, though, he won't have his number retired.

This week, the Seahawks assigned rookie Nick Emmanwori with the number 3. The safety, taken with the 35th overall pick, will be the first player to wear Wilson's old jersey since the quarterback was traded to the Denver Broncos in 2022.

The Seahawks acquired Drew Lock in the same Wilson trade, and Lock used to wear number 3 with the Denver Broncos. However, he decided to respect Wilson's history and chose number 2—which he will wear again in his return to Seattle.

Seahawks retired numbers:

  • 12. Fans
  • 45. Kenny Easley
  • 71. Walter Jones
  • 80. Steve Largent
  • 96. Cortez Kennedy

So far, the Seahawks haven't retired the numbers of any players from the 2010s. All players with the honor played in the 1980s, 1990s, or 2010s. Presumably, there will be a time when Earl Thomas, Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, Bobby Wagner, and others might be honored.

And it's possible that their numbers will be used in the meantime. But it is, especially for a quarterback, a decision that could be made in advance.

For example, the New England Patriots and the Green Bay Packers haven't assigned the number 12 for other players after Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers went to other teams—the Patriots now have officially retired the number, the Packers haven't.

Russell Wilson is certainly a great player in Seahawks' history. But maybe not enough to a point where his number will never be used again.

The quarterback hasn't had much success since leaving Seattle. After two failed seasons with the Broncos and a mediocre performance with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Wilson signed a one-year contract to serve as a bridge quarterback for the New York Giants.
