The Philadelphia Eagles turned to their safety needs with their second-round pick, selecting Texas Longhorns safety Andrew Mukuba at No. 64 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Mukuba comes to Philly following a dominant 2024 season where he logged 69 tackles, 12 pass breakups, five interceptions, and a forced fumble. His defining moment came under the bright lights against the Michigan Wolverines, where he snagged his first interception as a Longhorn, while adding four tackles, and two passes defended, an outstanding performance that crowned him National Defensive Back of the Week.

This was a great pick by the Eagles since Mukuba has the potential to be a strong replacement for star safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, whom the Eagles traded to the Houston Texans last month.

Like Gardner-Johnson, Mukuba has the versatility to play in different spots in the secondary, whether it’s deep safety or in the slot. With some time to adjust, he could definitely become a solid contributor. However, it might take a bit before he steps into Gardner-Johnson’s leadership role and has the same immediate impact.

If you ask Mukuba about his preferred role, he doesn't have a particular one in mind. He’s simply ready to contribute wherever the team needs him.

"For me, I'm an unselfish guy, so whatever is needed for the team at the moment," Mukuba told reporters in Green Bay, via Sports Illustrated. "Like you said, I'm versatile, so I'm a guy that can come in and fill in whatever is needed at the time. I'm just looking forward to it. Whatever the coach feels like is the best fit for the team, then I'm willing to do that."

The Eagles still have Reed Blankenship, Tristin McCollum, Andre Sam, Sydney Brown, and Lewis Cine in the mix at safety following the losses of Avonte Maddox and Gardner-Johnson, though Blankenship stands out as a proven impact player.

This gives Mukuba a real chance to earn a starting spot in Philly as a rookie.
