Ryan Day is set to name a new quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes for a third straight season this fall.
With Will Howard off to the NFL and now with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Buckeyes are having an open quarterback competition back in Columbus.
This spring it was Julian Sayin, Lincoln Kienholz, and freshman Tavien St. Clair all competing for the job. Now that spring football is in the rearview, Day is calling it a two-man race for the job.
“You can see the talent with Tavien. He just needs more experience, needs more at-bats. And the more he does that, the more he'll be in the mix,” Day said on Tuesday. “But right now it's a two-horse race.”
St. Clair’s time will come and it could be as soon as next season. The five-star quarterback may be the most talented that Day has recruited to Ohio State, though it just isn’t his time yet.
Sayin is the other five-star in the room and the favorite to win the job. However, Kienholz is seen as the veteran in the room entering his third season in Columbus and isn’t going to give up the job easily.
“I felt like Lincoln going into the spring game was a little bit ahead of Julian,” Day said. “And then I thought, if you just watch the game, Julian probably performed a little bit better than Lincoln during the spring.”
Sayin had a strong spring game to cap off the period and at least give some good feeling about the position moving forward. This summer will be big for Sayin to continue to get stronger and bigger.
As it has normally happened under Day at Ohio State, there is no reason to expect the quarterback competition to be settled by this fall.
