Titans WR additions in 2025 NFL Draft and free agency leave serious questions about Treylon Burks immediate future
Could Burks be cut while still on his rookie deal?
NASHVILLE — Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi emphasizes building an NFL roster up through the trenches. Borgonzi took to free agency to address that immediate need, but put former first-round receiver Treylon Burks' future in-question with six additions at the same position.
Three new veterans and two rookies enter Tennessee's wide out room in 2025.
Treylon Burks' future with the Tennessee Titans
Added competition and a group of Titans administrators that were not a part of drafting him do not bode well for Burks.
Selected in 2022 out of Arkansas after the controversial A.J. Brown trade with Philadelphia, Burks' career in Tennessee has been plagued by injury. Concussions, various knee sprains and now a 2024 ACL repair surgery have prevented the embattled pass-catcher from consistently being able to develop or produce. President of Football Operations Chad Brinker said on Monday that, while no official decision had been made, the team would likely decline Burks' fifth-year option.
No surprises there.
"You're looking at the value of the board for these guys," said Borgonzi of the newly drafted Titans receivers. "And where we took Chim(ere Dike) and Elic (Ayomanor) at that point, we were looking for young guys with some speed and they both fit that. Chim's a guy that has return ability as well. He's done punt returns, he's done kick returns. Elic's a big body receiver, X receiver that's strong, physical at the catch point. He gives a good catch radius for the quarterback. So those are some of the things we were looking at with those two guys when we took them."
Both Dike and Ayomanor were drafted by Tennessee in this year's fourth round.
"Going back to (Tyler) Lockett, he's a guy that—a lot of extended plays that Cam (Ward) has, or any of these quarterbacks, really, when they work outside the pocket," added Borgonzi about the veteran free agent addition. "Tyler's one of those guys, he can just find those open areas in those scramble drills. And you saw that over the years with Russell (Wilson), as well. (Chimere) Dike is a guy who can stretch the field. Elic (Ayomanor) is a bigger receiver. He's productive in the red zone. Big catch radius. And then Gunnar Helm that we took as well, too. Big, savvy route runner, good in the red zone, also provides a quarterback a big catch radius as well. And he's got good run after the catch, too."
Borgonzi brought in Lockett, Van Jefferson, and James Proche this offseason to foster additional competition and give No. 1 overall pick Ward reliable targets.
The best thing working in Burks' favor is the price tag to cut him. Still on his rookie contract, the former first-round pick would cost $4.57 million with either a pre or post-June 1 release. There are no savings associated with that transaction, according to Over The Cap.
Tennessee is not hurting for cap space, but cutting Burks outright would just be bad business.
