The semifinal round of the College Football Playoff may have given us the de facto National Championship between Ohio State and Texas.
It was a 28-14 win for the Buckeyes in the end, but in reality, it was a hard-fought game that was closer than the score made it appear.
Ohio State sealed the game late with a Jack Sawyer sack fumble that he scooped up and returned 83 yards for a touchdown. Sawyer’s long scoop and run sealed the win for Ohio State late in the Cotton Bowl.
It was a surreal moment for Sawyer, who is from Pickerington, Ohio in the Columbus metro area. Sawyer had the moment that many Ohio kids dream of having one day. The scoop and score was a moment that the former five-star recruit won’t ever forget.
“I'm just so thankful to be able to play for this coach and this team each and every week. We get 10 more days with each other,” Sawyer said after the win. “And that's what means the most to me, is we're going to compete for a National Championship now, which is something I've always dreamed of bringing back to Columbus since I was a little kid, you know, throwing the football in the backyard with dad with an Ohio State jersey on.”
So, I'm just really looking forward to that. And I was fortunate to make a big-time play.”
Sawyer finished with two pass breakups, a sack, and a touchdown for the Buckeyes. It was the biggest game of his life and he stepped up in a huge way. On the season now, Sawyer is up to nine sacks. The Ohio native has 23 sacks in four years and has improved gradually since he arrived at Ohio State in 2021.
The job is not finished for the Buckeyes, as the 12-team College Football Playoff is proving to be a long, tough road in its first year. After wins over Tennessee, Oregon, and Texas, the Buckeyes now play Notre Dame for it all in the National Championship.
