One year ago, the Green Bay Packers were probably better than most people would have thought. They beat the Dallas Cowboys in the wild card round, and lost a close game to the San Francisco 49ers a week later. Expectations were higher in 2024, but results were worse.
The Packers had a better regular season roster, improving from nine to 11 wins, but repeated the seventh seed in the NFC and lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the playoff opener.
It's easy to think that the arrow is pointing down. But quarterback Jordan Love doesn't agree with that premise.
"We did some really good things this season, made the playoffs and had a chance. Just didn't play good enough," Love said on Sunday night. "I guess you can say that any time you don't win the Super Bowl, the arrow is pointing down. Like I said, it wasn't good enough, but I think we did some really good things this season. We'll figure out ways to clean it up."
The 2024 version of the Packers is the second-youngest team in history to make the playoffs, right after. . . the 2023 Packers. So while there's an obvious disappointment after a loss, there are fair reasons for optimism.
"There are areas where I improved on, the team improved on, and there's stuff that I need to clean up, I want to be better at, for sure. So that's the nature of the game, it's never gonna be perfect," Love added. "There's always gonna be things to get better at, to improve on. But that'll definitely be part of the offseason, go back, watch the games, make a list of things that I can improve on and be better at. But we did some really good things as an offense, and there's a lot of things that we left out there that we could've done a lot better."
The self-inflicted wounds were a theme all season, and it didn't change on Sunday with four turnovers, including three interceptions for Love.
"Not good enough, I would say," Love answered when asked to assess the season. "It was kind of the main factor in the losses we had, not being able to get the job done. It's disappointing, we did a lot of good things this season, there are a lot of things that we didn't do as good, we have to find ways to improve on. Any time you're not holding that Super Bowl trophy up, it's tough and disappointing. I think we're a really good team and I think there were a lot of things that we just hurt ourselves in a lot of areas. It sucks right now, but we're gonna be back, we'll find ways to get better and attack this offseason."
At least, the Packers have draft capital and (finally) cap space to make moves. They need more talent, and the additions of Xavier McKinney and Josh Jacobs showed in 2024 that free agency is a viable avenue to add talent to the roster.
