NASHVILLE – Former Tennessee Titans GM Ran Carthon did an interview with 104.5 The Zone's Ramon, Kayla, and Will on Monday morning, nearly one week after being let go by the organization.
During the interview, Carthon gave his thoughts on Titans head coach Brian Callahan, reflected on his two years in Tennessee, and briefly touched on quarterback Will Levis.
Carthon predicted that Levis would improve in 2025. He pointed out the difficult situation Levis has been put in at the end of his college career and the beginning of his NFL career and believe that another year working with Brian Callahan would be productive.
"I think Will's going to be fine," saids Carthon. "We need to understand with Will that this is the fourth different offense he has had to learn in as many years. Another year in the system is going to help him."
When Levis was at Kentucky, he had his best season in 2021 with Liam Coen as the offensive coordinator. When Coen made the jump to the NFL in 2022 and took a job with the Los Angeles Rams, Rich Scangarello was hired by Kentucky as his replacement. It was a very different offense for Levis in his final college season.
As an NFL rookie, Tim Kelly called the plays in Tennessee while Mike Vrabel was still the head coach. Brian Callahan took over play-calling duties when he was hired as Vrabel's successor. Tennessee's offense in 2024 was a drastically different system than the one Kelly called in 2023.
Needless to say, Levis has been through the ringer. He has had little consistency around him. That's not an environment that helps a young quarterback prosper.
I find it interesting that Carthon defended Levis in the wake of his firing. It paints a more clear picture to me of how much faith Carthon had in Levis' growth during his tenure as GM, which explains more of his decision making.
But I find it more interesting that Carthon suggested Levis would be back with the Titans next season. It seems like the organization is motivated and positioned to replace him in either the 2025 NFL Draft or free agency. I would be shocked if he was still the team's starting quarterback to open the 2025 season, and if he's not the starter, there's a chance that he's not with the organization at all.
A fresh start might be what's best for Levis…Or is it? A fresh start would mean another new offense and another missed opportunity for continuity.
