As you return to the routine from your New Year's break, it's time to catch up on the Dallas Cowboys.

Despite being eliminated from the playoffs and having one more game left to be played, there are still Cowboys news to pay attention to.

Let's dive in!

Trey Lance is ready if he gets the chance to start in Week 18

Head coach Mike McCarthy isn't giving away who the Cowboys will be starting at quarterback on Sunday. But fans and media members alike are wondering if it'll finally be turn for Trey Lance instead of Cooper Rush.

With this being the final game of the regular season, it might be time to give the kid a chance before he hits free agency in March. Fans would appreciate the spark but the question remains: How does this coaching staff really feel about him? Because so far, they've shown little to no faith on the former No. 3 overall pick.

"I think if you don't think (you can be a starting QB in the NFL) about yourself, then you've got no chance. And I truly believe that in my heart," Lance said about potentially starting via DallasCowboys.com. "I feel like it's just where you drive your confidence from, what you have your faith in, and I feel like I've worked to this point to get to this point and I'm not going to stop until that opportunity comes and I'm able to make the most of it."

Ezekiel Elliott's gone

Just like it usually happens with movies, the Cowboys reunion with Zeke was the sequel that never felt right. He was fresh off of the worst couple of seasons in his career and Dallas prioritizing him over Rico Dowdle earlier in the season probably cost the offense some opportunities. Elliott was disciplined for tardiness and attendance later in the season.

The overall underwhelming season for Elliott culminated in his release on Wednesday after the running back requested it with the hopes of landing with a playoff team.

Elliott ended up clearing waivers and is now a free agent. It remains to be seen if he'll be picked up or not as we head into Week 18.

Surprise head coach candidate emerges in NFL conversation

This isn't specifically Cowboys news, but it certainly appears relevant for a team that could be moving on from Mike McCarthy this offseason. By now, you're probably familiar with most names being tossed around but NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero brought up a surprise head coaching candidate that might just fit the profile the Cowboys could be interested in: Experienced and with a strong resume.

"Keep an eye on Jon Gruden, we have not seen Gruden on full-time basis in the NFL since back in 2021 when he resigned after offensive emails were leaked to the media that he had sent while working as an analyst at ESPN," Pelissero said. "However, he has remained engaged, we saw him in the sidelines with the Bucs' owners earlier this fall, we saw him working with the Saints back in training camp, my understanding is if he had wanted the Saints' offensive coordinator job last year, he could've had it."
