Thinking back to the 2024 recruiting class, most forget that Princeton (N.J.) Hun School defensive tackle Owen Wafle was actually the first commitment that Notre Dame held in the class. The 6-2, 290-pound defensive lineman committed to the Fighting Irish back on May 16th of 2022, and remained in the class for well over a year.

Eventually both sides decided to part ways, which was reportedly more of a Notre Dame decision opposed to vice versa. Regardless, Wafle wanted to take some visits, and eventually, he no longer had a place in the class. The New Jersey standout opted for the Michigan Wolverines before too long, reuniting with defensive line coach Mike Elston who recruited him with the Irish.

After just one season in Ann Arbor, Wafle is now looking for a new home. It was announced on Thursday that the talented defender had officially entered the NCAA Transfer Portal.

Wafle did not appear in a single game for the Wolverines in his one season on campus. Coming out of the Hun School, he was considered to be a four-star recruit and the No. 50 defensive lineman in the 2024 class on the 247Sports Composite ranking. Outside of Notre and Michigan, Wafle also held offers from Oklahoma, Iowa, Vanderbilt, West Virginia, Michigan State, Minnesota, Rutgers, Syracuse, Duke, UMass, and Kent State.

Just how big the market will be for Wafle is unclear but a defensive lineman with four years of eligibility is always attractive. He will be a player to monitor closely, although Notre Dame will not be in the mix.
