There seems to be this weird era happening in the NFL right now. It's the era of teams keeping bad GMs and firing bad head coaches. Nobody expected Trent Baalke or Ryan Poles to stick around in their spots. But that stuff is happening. That's why there are only two GM jobs open right now: the Titans and the Jets.

So far, the Jets have conducted an exhaustive search in a short amount of time. They have interviewed or planned to interview 12 candidates this week, including the Lions' special assistant to the CEO, Chris Spielman. The Titans only have two interviews scheduled so far.

The weirdest thing of all is that perhaps the best and most ready GM candidate in the league has not received a single interview request yet. We're talking about Lions assistant GM Ray Agnew.

Agnew has been a front-office player since 2017. He spent three seasons as the Rams director of pro personnel. He had a lot to do with building the Los Angeles team that went to the Super Bowl in 2018 and then won it in 2021. He helped build both of those rosters. He came over to the Lions with Brad Holmes in 2021 and has been a major part of building Detroit into what they are now.

Agnew has also taken part in the first three NFL front office and general manager accelerator programs and has largely been someone that pundits expect to be a GM any day now. It's not like nobody knows who this guy is.

So why hasn't he received an interview yet? TV analysts, Senior Bowl guys, and failed GMs are getting interviews, but not Agnew.

The odd thing is that there's been a lot of talk about how well the Lions have built their team. Brad Holmes just won Executive of the Year last season and could do it again this year. There's clearly recognition of how good the Lions are building. You would think other teams would want to emulate that, but they largely aren't. It feels indicative of how dumb some team owners are these days.

There's still some time, either team might come calling for Agnew soon, but he would have been our first call if we were doing the search.
