San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings finished the 2024 season 25 yards short of reaching 1,000 receiving yards for the year.
The former Tennessee Vols standout looked like he was well on his way to reaching the 1,000 yard milestone in the 49ers' final game of the season, catching seven passes for 52 yards in the first 19 minutes of the game.
Jennings, however, was ejected late in the second quarter after a scuffle with Arizona Cardinals defensive back Sean Murphy-Bunting.
After the game, 49ers quarterback Josh Dobbs, Jennings' former teammate at Tennessee, spoke to reporters and he was asked about the controversial ejection.
"I thought it was very frustrating, without a doubt," said Dobbs, who was making his first start of the season. "I mean, Jauan's just being Jauan, quite frankly. If you look back at those two plays, their guy is taking off [Jennings'] helmet and Jauan gets a flag, no clue how that happens. And the second play, Jauan's getting stomped out on the sideline and they throw a flag on him and eject him when he's just playing football.
"So it was pretty frustrating knowing how much it meant for Jauan to be out there, to play hard, be himself playing the game, and then obviously to get to the milestone of 1,000 [yards]. It was frustrating to see him go out. I'm proud of the way he fought, all the guys fought, guys stepped up and had his back. Chris (Conley) comes right in and doesn't miss a beat. But yeah, it was frustrating we didn't get there (Jennings to 1,000 yards), especially when it was something taken out of our hands….I was excited to be out there with him, to play with Jauan. It's been a long time since college. And to have the opportunity to get him to that milestone, because I know how much it meant to him. So for them to take it out of his hands was frustrating."
It definitely seemed like Jennings was simply reacting to the aggressive play of the Cardinals' defensive backs. And since it's not in Jennings' nature to be passive (that's part of what makes him the great player that he is), there was no chance that he was going to just back down.
It's unfortunate for Jennings. He deserved to reach the 1,000 yard milestone. But even without that milestone, the former Vol became a household name in 2024 thanks to the way he stepped up and played like a superstar after the 49ers lost several key offensive contributors due to injury (wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and running back Christian McCaffrey).
Potential wild card option for Tennessee that Vols fans would love if defensive coordinator Tim Banks leaves for Clemson
