Ohio State QB Will Howard has plenty of experience playing Texas from his time in the Big 12 at Kansas State. Texas is the team that stands between the Buckeyes and advancing to a National Championship.

Last time out against Texas for Howard, Kansas State fell in overtime in the Big 12 Championship. It was a tough loss for Howard that he still remembers fondly.

“That one still sticks with me, still pisses me off a little bit,” Howard said on Sunday. “I just felt like that we had it.”

Now, Howard has a chance to rewrite his final outcome against the Longhorns in the Cotton Bowl. Howard has played very strong in the College Football Playoff. In the blowout win over Oregon, Ohio State’s starter went 17-of-26 passing for 317 yards and three touchdowns. In the first-round game against Tennessee, Howard threw for 311 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Not a lot of programs around the country will be rooting for the Buckeyes, however, Howard said his old team will be.

“I know there’s a lot of people back in Kansas that are rooting for the Buckeyes to get this one done against these guys.”

Texas has lost two games this season just like the Buckeyes. Both of their losses came against Georgia, who was bounced out of the playoff by Notre Dame last week.

Though Howard has never beat Texas, his final swing at them is the one that matters most. Howard has become a much better player since arriving in Columbus and his season stats of 3,490 passing yards and 32 touchdowns show that.

“I’ve played them four times [and] definitely have some feelings about them,” Howard said last week. “The way that we lost last year, we lost in overtime down there. I’m excited to get a crack at these guys. They’re a great football team.”

Ohio State is the hottest team in college football and the favorite to win it all. Still, a good Texas team stands in the way of them even reaching the final game. The Buckeyes’ starting quarterback having some extra motivation in this one is only a good thing.
