After the Denver Broncos' season came to an end on Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers moved quickly to speak with a member of the coaching staff that helped Sean Payton's team return to the playoffs.

The 49ers conducted an interview with Denver's assistant special teams coordinator Chris Banjo regarding their vacant special teams coordinator position.

Banjo took the job in Denver in 2023 following the end of his playing career after the 2022 season.

A 10-year veteran who played predominantly on special teams throughout his career, Banjo was a division rival of the 49ers back in 2022, his fourth and final season with the Arizona Cardinals.

That he is now under consideration for the top job coaching the 49ers' special teams speaks to the speed of Banjo's rise, and it is no surprise San Francisco is interested given the performance of Denver's special teams in 2024.

While the 49ers ended the regular season ranked 31st in special teams DVOA, the Broncos had one of the best special teams units in the league by that measure of per-play value, in which they ranked fourth.

The 49ers are open to the idea of moving Nick Sorensen, recently relieved of his duties as defensive coordinator, to special teams coordinator

But they have also interviewed Jett Modkins, the assistant special teams coordinator of the Detroit Lions, as they seek a replacement for the fired Brian Schneider.

With the Lions still in the playoffs, Banjo's availability may give him an edge as the 49ers seek to get their staff nailed down going into a critically important offseason. Were Banjo to get the job, it would mark a speedy transition from division rival to coach tasked with revitalizing the worst area of the game for San Francisco.
