From Day 1 at Ohio State, Jeremiah Smith has been a special player for the Buckeyes. It was known from the moment he practiced for the Buckeyes the first time that he was going to be a real problem for opposing defenses.
Smith has put up a huge season with the Buckeyes and has scored four touchdowns in the College Football Playoff to lead all wide receivers.
Only being a freshman, Ohio State is going to get two more years of Smith after this season. Players of this level don’t come around often, so enjoy the time that he is in Columbus. Smith’s ability right away has put him in a rare category and it isn’t about his actual play on the field.
Jeremiah Smith is one of just a few freshmen to acquire permanent total disability insurance
According to CBS Sports, Smith’s family took out permanent total disability insurance on the freshman before the College Football Playoff began. This protects Smith from a career-ending injury that could be devastating to his career earnings.
The policy not only protects Smith on the field but protects him off of it as well.
"If this kid steps off the curb and gets hit by a car, he's covered," said industry veteran Richard Giller head of insurance recovery at the Los Angeles-based Greenspoon Marder law firm, via CBS. "He does not have to be injured playing football."
Smith signed the policy with Leverage Disability and Life Insurance, who represented former Alabama stars Bryce Young and Will Anderson Jr. just a couple of years ago. Just four or five freshmen have ever acquired such insurance.
The policy will last until Aug. 1, 2027, or whenever Smith is drafted. Ohio State’s star freshman won’t be eligible to enter the NFL until the 2027 draft comes around. Smith’s premium is said to cost $7,500-$8,000 per every million in coverage.
Ohio State’s top playmaker has 71 catches, 1,227 receiving yards, and 14 touchdowns as a freshman for the Buckeyes. Smith has smashed every freshman receiver record for Ohio State and will likely take on plenty more records.
All in all, this is a smart move by Smith and his team. The 19-year-old is a star athlete that is going to make a ton of money playing football. Protecting himself is the smart thing to do and that is just what he has done.
