By now, Texas fans know what happened on first-and-goal at the Ohio State 1-yard line in the Cotton Bowl. How did it look from the other sideline?

Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles gave reporters a description of what he saw and called during those four plays on Tuesday.

On first-and-goal, Texas brought in a jumbo package with defensive players Barryn Sorrell and Jermayne Lole. Running back Jerrick Gibson was stuffed at the line of scrimmage by one of the best red-zone defensive teams in the country.

“First play, we got into ‘Big People.’ Boom! Stopped ’em,” Knowles said of the Buckeyes’ defensive personnel.

On second-and-goal, Texas ran a pitch play to the left with Quintrevion Wisner, Ohio State’s Caleb Downs shot through a gap and blew the play up for an incredible seven-yard loss.

“Second play, we were still in Big People, which leaves you vulnerable to some crack tosses and things,” Knowles said. “And our guys practiced it, and they read it, and Caleb Downs pulled his trigger exceptionally, and everybody rallied.”

Now, Texas faced third-and-goal from the Ohio State 8-yard line. Quarterback Quinn Ewers attempted a pass to Ryan Wingo but it fell incomplete.

“Third play, we were in a red-zone coverage that we haven't used before, so I think we had a good thing there,” Knowles said. “And Jack (Sawyer) actually got pressure on that play, and we had, we had all the routes covered.”

Without any hesitation, Knowles said, “And then I decided to stay in the same call on the next play, and it worked.”

On fourth-and-goal, Sawyer beat right tackle Cam Williams around the edge, sacked Ewers, forced a fumble and returned it 83 yards for the game-clinching touchdown.

“Just playing on a bad ankle, just dominated the block and got off the block and made the play,” Knowles said of Sawyer.

Knowles said he had coached against UT coach and play-caller Steve Sarkisian only once before when Knowles was at Oklahoma State. “So I had some familiarity. It helps,” Knowles said.

“Would I rather have them smashmouth or trick? Hmm. I don't know if I have an answer to that,” Knowles said. “I think when you see the tricks and you recognize them, you know, you have a real good shot to be successful.

“When it's just smashmouth, it's a fight for every inch. So, to me, it's a little bit less predictable when it's just smashmouth.”

The Buckeyes won 28-14 and advanced to the College Football Playoffs national championship game. Ohio State faces Notre Dame on Monday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
