In case you've been living under a rock, the Kansas City Chiefs can become the first team in NFL history to win three straight championships with a win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday.
Talks of a three-peat began as soon as the Chiefs won their second consecutive title last year. However, players and coaches quickly became coy about it as the season began. They kept it quiet throughout the months, but naturally talks about it have heated up the deeper that Kansas City has advanced in the postseason.
Now that we've reached the big game, multiple Chiefs were asked about what it would mean to them to achieve a three-peat. Most deflected by saying that they are focused on preparing for the Eagles, starting with star defensive tackle Chris Jones.
"No, we don't talk about the three-peat," Jones said. "I think that's what we're here for. We understand that we have one more game until the offseason. We can do whatever we want in the offseason. So, I think our main focus right now is making sure we prepare for the Philadelphia Eagles."
Cornerback Trent McDuffie echoed Jones' sentiment.
"Each and every week, for us, it's a 1-0 mindset as we like to say," McDuffie said. "Honestly, the three-peat hasn't really been talked about. We know it's a goal, but each week sets its own new opportunity to go out there and play."
Coach Andy Reid was definitely not going to talk three-peat.
"Yeah, you don't have time to think about all that," Reid said. "You're focused in on the job at hand here, and that's playing against a great Eagles team."
Tight end Travis Kelce knows how hard it's going to be to beat Philadelphia and accomplish the three-peat.
"This is going to be our biggest test yet," Kelce said. "They got a lot of great players, but the biggest thing is they play great together. You can see their communication, you can see the accountability they have, especially in the secondary. It's not going to make my job any easier, especially with those guys up front trying to get to Pat (Patrick Mahomes). So it's going to be a tough test, but I think right now we got a great game plan together. We're going to keep sharpening in our tools."
Finally, safety Justin Reid did actually lean into the three-peat talk a bit, acknowledging how legendary it would be if they can pull it off.
"Man, for the city of Kansas (City), the opportunity to do something that's never been done before, to be put on the Mount Rushmore of greatest teams in history across any sport ever," Reid said. "It's one hell of an opportunity, bro. It is something that I think the whole city will be proud of and remember for the rest of their lives. So, just a tremendous opportunity to go out and do something that's never been done before."
The three-peat is in the back of everybody's mind, but the Chiefs know how ton eliminate distractions and focus on the job that needs to be done. They know how hard it will be to beat the Eagles, who were consistently an elite team throughout the entire season.
