Ohio State’s season may have ended in a National Championship but it did not always look like it was trending that way.
The 13-10 loss to Michigan to end the regular season felt like it would end the year for the Buckeyes. Perhaps because it used to if they lost to Michigan, but Ohio State still had a chance thanks to the expanded College Football Playoff format.
Following that game against Michigan, the Buckeyes had to take a real look in the mirror to finish their season. The big goal of a National Championship still stood there and a players-only meeting helped it turn around.
“Coach Day made it different. It was a players-only meeting with Coach Day in there. He is such a tremendous leader,” Ohio State All-American C Seth McLaughlin said via “The Cube Show”. “I don’t think a lot of people give him credit for that. He lives and dies with his guys in the room. A lot of people respect that and love Coach Day for that.
“But that meeting, it really did change in that one meeting, man. Everybody in there was holding each other accountable, they were holding Coach Day accountable and there were a lot of great conversations that went on over a couple of hours with a bunch of people speaking from all different age groups and position groups. It was really just about getting people to buy back into what we [could] do in the postseason.”
From there it was history, the Buckeyes tallied off four straight wins over Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and Notre Dame to capture the title. In the process, Day moved to 70-10 as a head coach in Columbus, which is a remarkable record.
Ohio State has some work to do with the coaching turnover that happened after the National Championship, but they will attempt to defend their National Championship next season when they should once again be a contender.
