The day that Cleveland Browns fans were dreading finally came to pass on Monday when edge rusher Myles Garrett requested a trade from the franchise. After being the first overall pick in 2017 and spending eight years with the franchise, Garrett is ready for a change of scenery.
In his first public comments just 48 hours later, Garrett appeared on The Rich Eisen Show and discussed it.
"Felt it was it was time," said Garrett. "I had taken my time after the season, kind of relax and decompress emotionally. Wanted to distance myself a little bit and spend a little time talking my family about really how we feel about this decision. I mean, I kind of felt this way. I wanted to make sure I was completely detached, and they felt the same way I did, and for like, everyone's kind of on the on the same page, and felt like it was no time to release, speak on something that was near due to my heart. I have a lot of love for Cleveland, but it's always for me, been about continuing for championships, winning those big games and winning Lombardi, is that we haven't had the opportunity to do that, and that's all I'm asking for."
Garrett asking for a trade wasn't much of a surprise. He initially made comments about wanting to be on a winner after the season. A month later, he requested the trade.
In situations like this, it's normal for players to seek advice about what they are dealing with. Garrett reached out to Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, who also left Northeast Ohio (his hometown is Akron) on two separate occasions, including the infamous "decision."
"Kind of what a transition looked like for him. You know, what was his thought process going into it before he left Cleveland and making sure I made a logical decision, taking my time and just trying to take away the pressure of doing something like that, I know that no, Cleveland, really, that area, Northeast Ohio, has been his home. And you know, it's really been my It feels like my home as well."
Garrett's comments on the trade request reflect heavily on the meaning behind it. It wasn't something he took likely. This was a well-reasoned decision and how respectfully he's going about it is reflective of that.
