One of the last remaining vacant general manager vacancies has been filled, and Cincinnati Bengals senior executive Trey Brown did not get the job.
Per multiple reports, the New York Jets are hiring Denver Broncos assistant GM Darren Mougey. Josina Anderson was the first to report the news Friday afternoon.
Mougey got the job over Brown and Washington Commanders assistant GM Lance Newmark. Brown and Newmark were considered finalists in the process, but the Jets went with Mougey instead.
This was second consecutive year Brown received interest in a promotion to GM. He was requested to interview with the New England Patriots last year but turned down the opportunity. His two interviews with the Jets represent the closest he's gotten to leaving Cincinnati since arriving in 2021 as a scout. He was promoted to the position he has now, a high-ranking member of director of player personnel Duke Tobin's staff, in 2022.
Tobin doesn't officially have the GM label and Brown doesn't officially have assistant GM next to his name, but that's essentially what they are for the Bengals.
Keeping Brown is a big positive for the Bengals for that reason alone. He's highly valued within the organization, and other teams are taking notice of that. Keeping him on staff will be helpful for the offseason, but there's also a downside to the news for Cincinnati.
Bengals will not receive NFL Draft compensatory picks
Because Brown would've been a minority hire for the Jets, the Bengals would've received two third-round compensatory picks in the next two NFL Drafts. It wouldn't matter if the team were to hire someone to replace Brown in the front office, those picks would've been locked in.
This addition to the NFL's Rooney Rule was approved in 2020 and first implemented in 2021 when the Detroit Lions hired Brad Holmes away from the Los Angeles Rams to be their GM. The Rams then received compensatory third-round picks in the 2021 and 2022 drafts.
So while the Bengals do keep an important member of Tobin's personnel staff, they won't get those extra picks over the next two years.
