According to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter, the New York Jets are hiring Denver Broncos assistant general manager Darren Mougey for their vacant GM position.
Mougey interviewed with New York twice before landing the job. The Jets hired former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to be their head coach on Wednesday. Per NFL Insider Peter Schrager, Mougey may have gotten an endorsement from Broncos head coach Sean Payton, who is close with Glenn.
After a brief stint as a wide receiver with the Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals' practice squads from 2009-2010, Mougey joined the Broncos in 2012 as a scouting intern. He quickly climbed up the ranks of Denver's front office, holding the following job titles. . .
- Personnel and scouting assistant (2013)
- College and pro personnel scout (2014)
- Area scout (2015-2019)
- Assistant director of college scouting (2020)
- Director of player personnel (2021)
- Assistant general manager (2022-2024)
At 39-years-old, Mougey and Ryan Poles of the Chicago Bears are the second-youngest GMs in the NFL, behind the Cleveland Browns' Andrew Berry who is 37. Mougey may not be the only one leaving Denver for New York as Glenn is interested in hiring Broncos assistant special teams coach Chris Banjo, per a report from Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz.
The Broncos are still looking for a special teams coordinator after firing Ben Kotwica last week, so Banjo potentially leaving would create another vacancy. Banjo, a former safety, played for Glenn during their time together with the New Orleans Saints. Between that and the connection with Mougey, the move is a big possibility.
Mougey has certainly earned his opportunity with the Jets. He'll be missed by the Broncos after playing a significant role in drafting key players such as quarterback Bo Nix, linebacker Nik Bonitto, cornerback Patrick Surtain II, and wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. Mouegey will have his hands full turning around a Jets organization that hasn't had a lot of success over the past couple decades.
