The Tennessee Vols' 2024 season didn't end like they were hoping it would — a loss in the first round of the College Football Playoff on the road against Ohio State was a tough way for the Volunteers to go out — but it was still a great year for UT football.
Tennessee reached the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history. And the Vols earned wins against top rivals Florida and Alabama while on their way to the school's second 10-win season in the last three years.
Not too bad considering the Vols went a decade at one point without doing any of those things.
Despite the way the season ended, the Vols are poised to do something that hasn't happened in Knoxville in almost 25 years.
Tennessee is currently projected by 247Sports to finish as the No. 10 team in the final AP Top 25 poll of the 2024 season.
Finishing inside the top 10 in 2024 would give the Vols their second final top 10 ranking in the last three seasons (Tennessee finished No. 6 in 2022).
The last time the Vols finished in the top 10 twice in a three season span came in late 1990s/early 2000s.
Tennessee finished No. 9 in 1999 and they finished No. 4 in 2001.
Prior to the 2022 season, the 2001 season was the time the Vols finished inside the top 10.
What Josh Heupel has accomplished at Tennessee in just four years is nothing short of remarkable. For nearly 15 years, the Vols just couldn't seem to get it right. Coaching tenures from Lane Kiffin, Derek Dooley, Butch Jones, and Jeremy Pruitt started out with high hopes, but ended in disappointment. It's been quite the opposite for the Volunteers in the Heupel era.
