Oklahoma Sooners get some surprising love regarding their 2025 football team in their second season in the SEC
The Oklahoma Sooners had a pretty [athetic 2024 season. And, I can say that because I'm sure they would agree — by their standards, a losing season is terrible. The Oklahoma Sooners had a pretty [athetic 2024 season. And, I can say that because I'm sure they would agree — by their standards, a losing season is terrible. Before Brent Venables, the program's last losing season was in the late 90s. Under Venables, they have had two losing seasons.
But, none were worse than what we saw on the field every single game in 2024. Sure, having the toughest schedule in the entire country doesn't help, but they were not playing good football. Even in some of their wins, they were playing badly. You could say games against teams like Maine, they still did things that shouldn't have happened.
In the big-time win against Alabama, the win that extended their bowl game streak, the offense still wasn't good. It had moments, but it still wasn't good. They relied heavily on their defense, so much so the defense scored points. In 2025, that cannot happen. Well, any year in the SEC that can't happen.
You have to have a good defense and a good offense to be able to survive in the SEC. As they enter their second year in the best football conference in the country, even though the National Championship and playoffs would disagree with that take, they have to get better than last year on offense.
With the changes they have made — bringing on offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, bringing his quarterback John Mateer, and getting the transfer portal weapons they got, the offense is destined to be better. But, only time will tell.
One of the biggest college football media companies, On3, recently put out their way too early 2025 power rankings. And, based on everything the Sooners have done so far, they seem to think Oklahoma will be good enough to be ranked.
Both Ari Wasserman and Andy Staples ranked Oklahoma at No. 18 at this very moment. That's above teams like Texas A&M, Kansas State, Miami, SMU, etc, all teams that were far better than Oklahoma last season.
That's interesting because I'm willing to bet most of the fan base thinks that they aren't that good, yet. They still have some work to do, but the feeling is that this team will be better. Now, will they be the No. 18 ranked team? Who knows.
Most recent transfer portal entry signifies the Oklahoma Sooners may have to completely rebuild key position group
The Sooners are going to have a long offseason.
