It was a magical season for Notre Dame football, but it ended with a disappointing 34 to 23 loss to Ohio State in the national championship game. The Fighting Irish came out on fire on their first drive, but fizzled for the majority of the next two and a half quarters, eventually falling short in the end despite a late comeback attempt. It was an unfortunate end to what felt like a team of destiny.
One of the lone bright spots in the loss was the continued emergence of sophomore wide receiver Jaden Greathouse, who was a big reason for that comeback effort. The Texas native ended the day with five receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Both of his scores were highlight reel plays, one a dynamic play after the catch and the other being a contested catch to cut the lead to one score.
The 6-1, 215-pound pass catcher was a big catalyst during the semifinal victory over Penn State the previous game as well. During that matchup, Greathouse hauled in another seven receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown. Those were his lone two 100-yard performances of the season, and the only two by Notre Dame wide receivers all season long.
There is no such thing as moral victories, especially in a game of this magnitude. For Irish fans who watched the games throughout the year, you know that the wide receiver position was maddeningly inconsistent. The group struggled to consistently make big plays, and in a lot of instances, suffered from dropped passes and minimal impact.
Whether it’s Steve Angeli, CJ Carr, or Kenny Minchey in 2025 under center, at least Notre Dame may have found a go-to pass catcher to lean on. Greathouse grabbed national attention in the loss, and should have all of it from his quarterback next season. Hopefully he’s a big part of the passing offense in taking a step forward next fall.
