Brian Schottenheimer, the offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys in the last two seasons, is quickly rising as one of the favorites for the head coaching job in Frisco, Texas.
After Schottenheimer was made the betting favorite for the gig over the weekend, additional reports emerged on the team's rising interest in him.
Now, according to Ian Rapoport from NFL Network, the Cowboys are scheduling an interview with him, getting him one step closer to landing the job.
Schottenheimer, a surprise name in the coaching cycle, has a big argument working for him inside the organization: Continuity. Having signed Dak Prescott to a $240 million last year, the Cowboys are likely considering their own offensive coordinator in an effort to not shake up the offense all that much. For better or worse, that appears to be his advantage over many strong candidates from this year's cycle, most of which Dallas didn't bother interviewing.
Schottenheimer arrived in Dallas in 2022 as a coaching analyst before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2023 when Kellen Moore parted ways with the Cowboys. Under Mike McCarthy, Schottenheimer didn't call plays, which reports suggest would change if hired as head coach.
The Cowboys moved on from McCarthy last week after the sides failed to agree on contract length. Dallas appeared to have a shorter deal in mind, which McCarthy passed on, something that reportedly took Jerry Jones by surprise.
With free agency and the NFL Draft in the horizon, time is a factor in the Cowboys' coaching search as they gear up for a 2025 season they hope is better than the last. So far, their coaching search hasn't been exactly inspiring for fans seeking change.
Schottenheimer will be the Cowboys' fourth interview, following Moore, Robert Saleh, and Leslie Frazier.
