NFL executive suggests the Steelers could be making a Kenny Pickett-level mistake all over again regarding 2025 QB decision

The biggest question of the Pittsburgh Steelers offseason once again revolves around the QB position.
Armed with another pick in the 20s of an NFL Draft whose QB class has a lot of similarities to the 2022 class, there is a chance for some massive Deja Vu in Pittsburgh.
And that's exactly what one NFL scouting director told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler…
Steelers To Pick a QB in Round 1?
"I still think this could go either way," the scouting director told ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler. "Part of me feels like they bring back Russell. Either way, I expect them to draft a quarterback fairly high. They need someone who can be the answer long term."
To this point, much of the conversation surrounding the QB position has been between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Both are slated to hit free agency, and if read the tea leaves as well as listen to coach Tomlin, there is a clear frontrunner in that race…
"I thought that the way that he managed his professional circumstances was really impressive," said Tomlin when asked if Fields could be a 17 game starter and have pole position heading into 2025. "I thought he brought an urgency to his day-to-day work, regardless of his role. I thought he got continually better within our system of ball. Throughout the process, I thought the way he conducted himself, makes that a legitimate thought or idea at this juncture."
There was a also the report that Russell Wilson and OC Arthur Smith did not have the strong working relationship that they told the media they had, and only one of them is under contract in 2025, and he doesn't play QB.
But, with the way the season ended with five consecutive losses and a disconnect existing with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, that deal might not materialize. Wilson was brought here to help end the playoff victory drought, and it didn't happen. Bringing in another veteran quarterback does not make sense. That's why Fields, in all likelihood, will be given the job."

So for Pittsburgh, their likeliest bet, seems to be their best. They will be well out of striking range from passers like Cam Ward and Sheduer Sanders barring a big trade, and there isn't a ton of confidence in the class outside of those two.
Not to mention, everyone remembers what happened the last time the Steelers pulled the trigger a little too soon on a QB in the draft.
