The Washington Commanders are prepping for an NFC Championship Game tilt against the Philadelphia Eagles after a very successful regular season, so of course it makes sense that a lot of teams around the league are thinking about plucking guys from the building.
Defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. interviewed with the New York Jets for the current head coaching job opening the day after the Commanders' upset win over the Detroit Lions and offensive Kliff Kingsbury has been a big topic when talking about potential hires elsewhere, even if he's yet to actually interview with anyone.
But it's assistant manager Lance Newmark that's likely to go before anyone else and it looks like an inevitability, at this point. Per Josina Anderson, things are trending that way after successful meetings with Newmark and Aaron Glenn, the current Lions defensive coordinator. If things go as planned, Glenn will become the Jets' next head coach and Newmark will become the general manager.
It's quite the rise for Newmark, who spent just one year as assistant GM in Washington. Before that, he was with the Lions for 26-years where he "most recently held the role of senior director of player personnel for Detroit and helped oversee both the college and pro scouting operations. He also assisted with the weekly management of the Lions roster and assisted Lions Executive Vice President and General Manager Brad Holmes with the implementation of Holmes' scouting vision throughout the entire personnel department", per the Commanders' website.
Newmark obviously knows Glenn, who's been with Detroit since 2021, and that's certainly part of this process, as well.
Newmark certainly played a key role in constructing the Commanders' roster both through free agency and the draft. It'll be interesting to see if he can hit the ground running in New York, but obviously only time will tell as the Jets try to find someone who can restore some sense of normalcy to the franchise.
