Now that the season is over following the national championship loss to Ohio State, we are going to see several members of the Notre Dame program begin to look for other opportunities that are out there. On Wednesday, two former Irish wide receivers opted for the transfer portal with Jayden Thomas and Deion Colzie officially entering. Neither was much of a surprise.
Thomas was the more accomplished of the two, playing in 43 games in his Notre Dame career. During that stretch, the Georgia native hauled in 64 receptions for 838 yards and seven touchdowns. Thomas also carries the football five times for 37 yards.
A bigger body at 6-2 and 218 pounds, Thomas is an outstanding blocker and a dependable target in the passing game. He isn’t a dynamic athlete so he won’t bring much in terms of explosive plays. For a team looking for an experienced wide receiver, there should be a decent market.
Also from the state of Georgia, Colzie’s career didn’t live up to expectations in South Bend. In 44 career games, he managed to record just 21 receptions for 345 yards and three touchdowns. At 6-4 and 211 pounds, Colzie is an extremely gifted athlete. Injuries and inconsistency never allowed him to reach his athletic upside. A program will definitely take the gamble on his untapped potential.
Both wide receivers will have one year of eligibility remaining. With the Irish bringing in two transfer portal wide receivers in Malachi Fields (Virginia) and Will Pauling (Wisconsin), as well as three freshman pass catchers, it was clear that neither was going to be heavily in the future plans. Both were members of the 2021 recruiting class for the Irish, and each graduated with a Notre Dame degree.
