Whenever a defensive-minded head coach is hired, the immediate follow-up question is who his offensive coordinator will be. That's a question the New York Jets will have to answer after hiring Aaron Glenn as their next head coach.

Glenn, a former NFL defensive back, has a long track record with the New Orleans Saints and spent four seasons with the Detroit Lions as their defensive coordinator. Those are two places where the influences are evident.

So, let's talk about some options for the Jets OC position.

More likely

So far, Lions quarterbacks coach Mark Brunell is the first name from Detroit mentioned to possibly follow Glenn to New York—Brunell played quarterback for the Jets in 2010 and 2011 as Mark Sanchez’s backup. It's unclear if that would be as offensive coordinator, though, and the Lions don't seem as high on him for the OC job to replace Ben Johnson.

There are other names that have been frequently connected to the Jets. John Morton, the Denver Broncos passing game coordinator, worked with the Lions as a senior offensive assistant in 2022 and is now working under Sean Payton, Glenn's former boss with the Saints.

Nick Caley, the Los Angeles Rams tight ends coach and pass game coordinator, has never worked with Glenn but has been mentioned as a possibility. He's an ascending coach with experience on the New England Patriots too.

Other names to consider

The Lions' offensive coaching staff has several intriguing names. Passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand is considered a candidate to follow Ben Johnson to the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator, but Dan Campbell could also evaluate him.

Assistant head coach and running backs coach Scottie Montgomery is a candidate to be the Lions OC as well. Hank Fraley, the offensive line coach, has interviewed for the Seattle Seahawks OC job.

Alternatives from other teams would include Bills quarterbacks coach Ronald Curry (who worked with Glenn on the Saints), Broncos quarterbacks coach Davis Webb (ascending coach who would bring elements of the Sean Payton offense), Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks coach Josh McCown (perceived around the league as a future head coach), and more experienced playcallers like Saints offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and Las Vegas Raiders interim offensive coordinator Scott Turner.

The Jets have a lot of work left to do. The next step is the foundation of the coaching staff, and no other position will be more relevant than the offensive coordinator.
