The New York Jets have found their man. And while I wouldn’t label it as a home run hire, it was certainly the best available to them.

The Aaron Glenn hire is no surprise, and after losing out on Mike Vrabel to the New England Patriots, this was likely the top candidate on the Jets board for the head coaching spot. Glenn played for the Jets from 1994 through 2001, before finishing his 15-year career with the Texans, Cowboys, Jaguars, and Saints. He has been the defensive coordinator since 2021 with the Detroit Lions.

Glenn has a unique task ahead of him as he tries to right a ship that seems to keep taking on water even after it sunk to the bottom of the ocean. Glenn will try to navigate a new GM, a giant question mark at the quarterback position, and an owner who is bottom five in all of North American sports. He’ll have to do all that with a good, but not great roster, and a fan base that has lost all patience for losing. He will have to find instant success in a difficult situation, or the fans and the owner will get restless.

At this point, the biggest question for Glenn will be how he will put together his coaching staff, with a large emphasis on who will run the offense. While many Jets fans want to see Josh McCown get the OC job, that is not likely to happen. The Jets defense has been one of the better units in the NFL for years, but the team can never seem to be able to catch up offensively. With Glenn’s defensive background, that trend could very well continue if he can’t get the right offensive coordinator and quarterback.

The Glenn hire was a safe one for Woody Johnson. It was by far the least offensive of all the options available. That doesn’t make it a good hire. That doesn’t make it a bad hire. Only time will be able to determine that despite what Jets twitter would say. Like any Jets hire, you have people on one side believing it is the worst hire in the franchise history, and you have one side of people saying “Super Bowl or Bust” for 2025. They are both wrong.

I believe Glenn is a leader of men. I believe New York will not be too much for him, nor will the media. I expect he will handle all the things that New York, its fans, its media will throw at him. The question then becomes will he have enough left after dealing with all that to also win enough football games.

At the time of this posting, contract details are not yet available, but it reported to be a five-year contract.
