Ohio State was hit with the harsh reality that good teams have high turnover after National Championship wins.

Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles took the same role at Penn State and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly took off for the NFL and the Las Vegas Raiders.

Ohio State reacted rather quickly to address Kelly’s departure and is doing it from within.

Wide receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator Brian Hartline is taking over as the full-time offensive coordinator for the Buckeyes. This was the most obvious answer for the Buckeyes, as Hartline and Day have worked together for the last eight seasons.

Hartline was a standout wide receiver at Ohio State and became a fourth-round pick to the Miami Dolphins where he played five seasons. Hartline, 38, spent one (2015) season with the Cleveland Browns.

The rise to become the offensive coordinator at Ohio State took some time for Hartline, who joined the program in 2017 as a quality control assistant. Hartline quickly became the wide receivers coach in 2018 and has held the role since. Ohio State has become the premier spot for putting wide receivers in the NFL.

Hartline was named the offensive coordinator in 2023 when Day called plays and still held that role alongside Kelly this past season. Now, he is once again the full-time coordinator.

Other jobs have come about for Hartline and he has remained loyal to Ohio State. Hartline undoubtedly could have taken a coordinator job at a program somewhere by now calling plays but has remained at Ohio State.

Julian Sayin is likely to be the quarterback in 2025 and the offense is becoming more clear for the Buckeyes with Hartline taking over as OC.
