The Los Angeles Rams are losing another offensive assistant from their ranks following an impressive run to the Divisional Round of the playoffs, with Sean McVay saying farewell to a key lieutenant.

On Monday the Houston Texans announced they have hired Nick Caley as their new offensive coordinator, replacing Bobby Slowik.

Caley had been serving as the Rams tight ends coach and passing game coordinator.

He was hired as tight ends coach in 2023, and had the role of passing game coordinator added to his duties for the 2024 campaign, which the Rams finished 10th in NFL in passing DVOA, a measure of per-play value.

Caley had previously spent eight seasons with the New England Patriots, primarily working as their tight ends coach after initially being hired as an offensive assistant in 2015.

Still only 42, Caley's stock is rapidly rising, and his departure is another blow to a Rams offense that was already reported as being set to lose Nate Scheelhaase, Los Angeles' offensive assistant/passing game specialist, who is expected to be hired as the offensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

If Scheelhaase's hire is indeed confirmed, then it will mean McVay will face two members of his 2024 staff in the 2025 campaign.

Indeed, with the NFC West teams facing those from the AFC South next season, the Rams will take on both the Jaguars and the Texans, with the game against Houston set to take place at SoFi Stadium.

In the more immediate future, though, McVay will have to focus on the task of rebuilding his coaching staff in the wake of those two key departures. Given his track record of hiring assistants who continue to be prised away by rival teams, the odds are he will succeed in identifying new coaches who can help the Rams continue to prosper while simultaneously bolstering their own reputations.
