Losses to the Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos have already prevented the Kansas City Chiefs from completing the second perfect season in NFL history no matter if the three-peat does happen this Sunday. The 1972 Miami Dolphins were able to celebrate their exclusivity in Week 11 when Kansas City fell to Buffalo.
But the Chiefs weren't expected to win that game, at least not by the sportsbooks. The Bills were 1.5-point favorites at home and verified that line with a 30-21 victory. The Broncos were also expected to win by at least 10.5 points in Week 18, and they won 38-0 thanks to the Chiefs resting their starters.
This means the Chiefs' only losses this year occurred when they were underdogs. Including postseason action, they've yet to lose as the favorite. In fact, they've won more times as a favorite this year than any team in league history, including those perfect Dolphins from over 50 years ago.
Jay Morrison of SI Bengals Talk pointed out this week that the Chiefs now have the best all-time record in a single season as the betting favorite at 16-0. The '72 Dolphins were 15-0 during their 17-game run to become undefeated champions.
Per Morrison, the Chiefs enter this weekend as the seventh team with at least 11 wins and zero losses as a favorite, with the '72 Dolphins being the second to ever do it.
Only five other teams have gone undefeated with double-digit wins as a favorite: 2005 Seahawks: 14-0, 1977 Broncos: 12-0, 1967 Colts: 11-0, 1998 Falcons: 11-0, 2004 Steelers: 11-0 – SI Bengals Talk's Jay Morrison
Now, is it a bit unfair to compare these records considering the Chiefs played in three additional regular season games compared to the Dolphins? Of course. Comparing stats from now and then before even the leap to a 16-game schedule will always include this asterisk, but the Chiefs have a chance to extend it for good measure.
Kansas City remains a 1.5-point favorite over the Philadelphia Eagles for Super Bowl LIX. A win would make then a perfect 17-0 as the betting favorite this year, and just as many wins as Miami had for the entirety of its historic season.
Add it to the list for how significant Sunday night stands to be.
