Latest on Saints, Kellen Moore
The Saints plan to meet with Moore again after the Super Bowl. Of course, Moore's Eagles are playing in the big game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
They have also alerted other candidates, like Anthony Weaver and Mike Kafka, regarding their continued pursuit of Moore. That is certainly a nod that they will agree to a deal with the Eagles OC, as long as they iron out all of the details following the Super Bowl.
The Saints cannot contact Moore anymore until after the Lombardi Trophy is awarded on February 9th. Their communication will have a pause, but all indications are that he will land as the next HC in New Orleans.
Moore is the top candidate for the team. They just have to close the deal.
The QB situation
Meanwhile, the future at quarterback is still in question for the Saints. Derek Carr is still under contract, but New Orleans has avenues to move off of the veteran QB via release or trade later in the offseason.
The Saints' uncertainty at the QB position potentially did give Moore a bit of pause when discussing the HC job, according to Dianna Russini.
“There was a little scuttlebutt, about whether or not Kellen would want this job. And it’s due to the fact they don’t have a quarterback there already in place, that was concerning.
With that being said I think he’s come around on it from what I was hearing, ‘Maybe this is the right spot for me.'”
— Russini said on her Scoop City podcast
With this update, it's easy to think about Carr's future with the Saints. Moore may prefer a fresh start with his own choice at quarterback in his first season or two. Maybe that is Carr or the young Spencer Rattler – or maybe it is not.
There's no way to know as of now, but it does seem like he's open to moving on from Carr based on this sort of discussion around him taking the job in New Orleans.
In the long-term, it makes plenty of sense for the Saints to go ahead and rip off the bandage that is Carr's contract during this offseason to try to get a start on finding their next QB.
