Former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Kaleb Webb learned this week how volatile life in the NCAA transfer portal can be.

Webb, who spent the first three seasons of his career at Tennessee before entering the portal earlier this month, announced last Friday his intentions to transfer to Wake Forest.

Three days after Webb announced that he was heading to Winston Salem to join the Demon Deacons' roster, Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson announced his resignation.

Webb, who was suddenly in a position where he'd be playing for an unknown head coach, quickly changed course on his transfer decision. The Georgia native announced on Tuesday that he's transferring to Maryland instead.

Wake Forest athletic director John Currie, the former Tennessee athletic director who led one of the most disastrous coaching searches in the history of college football in 2017, told reporters on Tuesday that he's been vetting head coaching candidates for the last 10 days. That comment indicates that Clawson's decision to step down is a move that was in the works before Webb committed to the Demon Deacons.

This is just another example of how chaotic the winter transfer portal window is. There's a lot of movement happening in a short amount of time, which can lead to some quick decisions that don't always turn out to be the right decision. It's not an ideal setup, but it's reality (for now at least). Fortunately for Webb, he was able to quickly find a new home. Other transfer players, however, might not be as lucky in the future in similar situations.
